The Secret of Greatness and the Soul of Goodness
28:6.20 (317.1)6 and 7. The Secret of Greatness and the Soul of Goodness. The ascending pilgrims having awakened to the import of time, the way is prepared for the realization of the solemnity of trust and for the appreciation of the sanctity of service. While these are the moral elements of greatness, there are also secrets of greatness. When the spiritual tests of greatness are applied, the moral elements are not disregarded, but the quality of unselfishness revealed in disinterested labor for the welfare of one’s earthly fellows, particularly worthy beings in need and in distress, that is the real measure of planetary greatness. And the manifestation of greatness on a world like Urantia is the exhibition of self-control. The great man is not he who “takes a city” or “overthrows a nation,” but rather “he who subdues his own tongue.”
28:6.21 (317.2)Greatness is synonymous with divinity. God is supremely great and good. Greatness and goodness simply cannot be divorced. They are forever made one in God. This truth is literally and strikingly illustrated by the reflective interdependence of the Secret of Greatness and the Soul of Goodness, for neither can function without the other. In reflecting other qualities of divinity, the superuniverse seconaphim can and do act alone, but the reflective estimates of greatness and of goodness appear to be inseparable. Hence, on any world, in any universe, must these reflectors of greatness and of goodness work together, always showing a dual and mutually dependent report of every being upon whom they focalize. Greatness cannot be estimated without knowing the content of goodness, while goodness cannot be portrayed without exhibiting its inherent and divine greatness.
28:6.22 (317.3)The estimate of greatness varies from sphere to sphere. To be great is to be Godlike. And since the quality of greatness is wholly determined by the content of goodness, it follows that, even in your present human estate, if you can through grace become good, you are thereby becoming great. The more steadfastly you behold, and the more persistently you pursue, the concepts of divine goodness, the more certainly will you grow in greatness, in true magnitude of genuine survival character.

Buddhism
Buddhism
131:3.1 (1446.3)Ganid was shocked to discover how near Buddhism came to being a great and beautiful religion without God, without a personal and universal Deity. However, he did find some record of certain earlier beliefs which reflected something of the influence of the teachings of the Melchizedek missionaries who continued their work in India even to the times of Buddha. Jesus and Ganid collected the following statements from the Buddhist literature:
131:3.2 (1446.4)“Out of a pure heart shall gladness spring forth to the Infinite; all my being shall be at peace with this supermortal rejoicing. My soul is filled with content, and my heart overflows with the bliss of peaceful trust. I have no fear; I am free from anxiety. I dwell in security, and my enemies cannot alarm me. I am satisfied with the fruits of my confidence. I have found the approach to the Immortal easy of access. I pray for faith to sustain me on the long journey; I know that faith from beyond will not fail me. I know my brethren will prosper if they become imbued with the faith of the Immortal, even the faith that creates modesty, uprightness, wisdom, courage, knowledge, and perseverance. Let us forsake sorrow and disown fear. By faith let us lay hold upon true righteousness and genuine manliness. Let us learn to meditate on justice and mercy. Faith is man’s true wealth; it is the endowment of virtue and glory.
131:3.3 (1446.5)“Unrighteousness is contemptible; sin is despicable. Evil is degrading, whether held in thought or wrought out in deeds. Pain and sorrow follow in the path of evil as the dust follows the wind. Happiness and peace of mind follow pure thinking and virtuous living as the shadow follows the substance of material things. Evil is the fruit of wrongly directed thinking. It is evil to see sin where there is no sin; to see no sin where there is sin. Evil is the path of false doctrines. Those who avoid evil by seeing things as they are gain joy by thus embracing the truth. Make an end of your misery by loathing sin. When you look up to the Noble One, turn away from sin with a whole heart. Make no apology for evil; make no excuse for sin. By your efforts to make amends for past sins you acquire strength to resist future tendencies thereto. Restraint is born of repentance. Leave no fault unconfessed to the Noble One.
131:3.4 (1447.1)“Cheerfulness and gladness are the rewards of deeds well done and to the glory of the Immortal. No man can rob you of the liberty of your own mind. When the faith of your religion has emancipated your heart, when the mind, like a mountain, is settled and immovable, then shall the peace of the soul flow tranquilly like a river of waters. Those who are sure of salvation are forever free from lust, envy, hatred, and the delusions of wealth. While faith is the energy of the better life, nevertheless, must you work out your own salvation with perseverance. If you would be certain of your final salvation, then make sure that you sincerely seek to fulfill all righteousness. Cultivate the assurance of the heart which springs from within and thus come to enjoy the ecstasy of eternal salvation.
131:3.5 (1447.2)“No religionist may hope to attain the enlightenment of immortal wisdom who persists in being slothful, indolent, feeble, idle, shameless, and selfish. But whoso is thoughtful, prudent, reflective, fervent, and earnest—even while he yet lives on earth—may attain the supreme enlightenment of the peace and liberty of divine wisdom. Remember, every act shall receive its reward. Evil results in sorrow and sin ends in pain. Joy and happiness are the outcome of a good life. Even the evildoer enjoys a season of grace before the time of the full ripening of his evil deeds, but inevitably there must come the full harvest of evil-doing. Let no man think lightly of sin, saying in his heart: ‘The penalty of wrongdoing shall not come near me.’ What you do shall be done to you, in the judgment of wisdom. Injustice done to your fellows shall come back upon you. The creature cannot escape the destiny of his deeds.
131:3.6 (1447.3)“The fool has said in his heart, ‘Evil shall not overtake me’; but safety is found only when the soul craves reproof and the mind seeks wisdom. The wise man is a noble soul who is friendly in the midst of his enemies, tranquil among the turbulent, and generous among the grasping. Love of self is like weeds in a goodly field. Selfishness leads to grief; perpetual care kills. The tamed mind yields happiness. He is the greatest of warriors who overcomes and subdues himself. Restraint in all things is good. He alone is a superior person who esteems virtue and is observant of his duty. Let not anger and hate master you. Speak harshly of no one. Contentment is the greatest wealth. What is given wisely is well saved. Do not to others those things you would not wish done to you. Pay good for evil; overcome evil with the good.
131:3.7 (1447.4)“A righteous soul is more to be desired than the sovereignty of all the earth. Immortality is the goal of sincerity; death, the end of thoughtless living. Those who are earnest die not; the thoughtless are dead already. Blessed are they who have insight into the deathless state. Those who torture the living will hardly find happiness after death. The unselfish go to heaven, where they rejoice in the bliss of infinite liberality and continue to increase in noble generosity. Every mortal who thinks righteously, speaks nobly, and acts unselfishly shall not only enjoy virtue here during this brief life but shall also, after the dissolution of the body, continue to enjoy the delights of heaven.”

The arena of consciousness of choice
The arena of consciousness of choice
111:1.1 (1216.2)Although the work of the Judges is spiritual in nature, they must of necessity perform all their labor on a rational basis. Consciousness is the human ground on which the Mentor-mind, with the cooperation of the personality in whom it dwells, must bring the morontia-soul to development.
111:1.2 (1216.3)There is a cosmic unity in the distinct levels of consciousness of the universe of universes. The rational self arises in the cosmic consciousness, approximately as a mist arises in the cosmic energies in universe-space. At the human (i.e. personal) level of the rational self, with the consent of mortal consciousness, the potential of spirit evolution becomes dominant, because of the spiritual gifts of the human personality as well as the creative presence of an entity point of absolute value within this human self. Yet this spirit-dominance over material consciousness depends on two experiences: this consciousness must have evolved through the service of the seven assistant consciousness spirits, and the material (personal) self must choose to cooperate with the indwelling Richter in creating and nurturing the morontia-self, the evolutionary, potentially immortal soul.
111:1.3 (1216.4)Material consciousness is the arena in which human personalities live, are aware of themselves, make decisions, elect God or forsake him, come to eternal life or destroy themselves.
111:1.4 (1216.5)Material evolution has endowed you with an apparatus of life, your body; the Father Himself has endowed you with the purest spirit-actuality known in the universe, your Thought-giver. But to you, subject to your own decisions, consciousness has been entrusted, and by this consciousness you live or you die. In this consciousness, and with this consciousness, you make those moral decisions which enable you to acquire Richter Equality, and this is God Equality.
111:1.5 (1216.6)Mortal consciousness is a temporary system of mind given to humans for the duration of a material life for their use, and according to their use of this consciousness they accept or reject the potential of an eternal existence. Consciousness is virtually the only universe-reality you possess that is subject to your will, and the soul - the morontia-self - will faithfully display the harvest of the decisions the mortal self makes in time. Man's consciousness rests lightly on the underlying electro-chemical mechanism, and touches lightly on the mind-morontia energy system above it. Of neither of these two systems is man ever fully conscious in his mortal life; therefore, he must work in the consciousness, of which he is conscious. And what secures survival is not so much what the mind understands as what the mind desires to understand; it is not so much what consciousness resembles as what consciousness tries to resemble, which constitutes identification with mind. What culminates ascending through the universe is not so much that man is aware of God as that he craves God. What you are today is not as important as what you become, from day to day and in eternity.
111:1.6 (1217.1)Consciousness is the cosmic instrument on which the human will can play the discords of destruction, and on which this same human will can produce the glorious melodies of identification with God and consequent eternal survival. The Richter granted to man is, after all, inaccessible to evil and incapable of sin, but mortal consciousness can actually be twisted, distorted, and made bad and ugly by the sinful cooperations of a perverse, selfish, human will. Likewise, this consciousness can become noble, clean, true, and good - truly great - in accordance with the spirit-enlightened will of a man who knows God.
111:1.7 (1217.2)Evolutionary consciousness is wholly stable and reliable only when it manifests itself at both extremes of cosmic intellectuality - the wholly mechanical and the wholly spiritualized. Between the intellectual extremes of pure mechanical regulation and true spirit-nature, there is that vast group of evolving and ascending kinds of consciousness whose stability and tranquility depend on the choice of personality and on its identification with spirit.
111:1.8 (1217.3)Yet man does not submit his will idly, slavishly to the Richter. Rather, he chooses actively, positively, and cooperatively to follow the guidance of the Richter when, and while, this guidance consciously differs from the desires and impulses of natural, mortal consciousness. The Richters do manipulate man's consciousness, but never dominate it against his will; for the Richter, human will has supreme authority. And this will they truly consider and respect as they strive to achieve the spiritual ends of directing thought and transforming character in the almost limitless arena of the evolving human mind.
111:1.9 (1217.4)Consciousness is your ship, the Richter is your pilot, the human will is the captain. The captain of the mortal vessel must be wise enough to trust that the divine pilot will guide the ascending soul to the morontia ports of eternal survival. Only from selfishness, sloth and sin can man's will reject the guidance of this loving pilot and ultimately cause the mortal voyage to end in shipwreck on the dangerous, evil cliffs of rejected grace and on the rocks of sin embraced by him. With your consent, this faithful pilot will lead you safely across the barriers of time and over the obstacles of space, to the very origin of divine consciousness, and even further, to the Father of Judges on Paradise.
